i went to work today.

this wouldn't be so exciting if it weren't for the fact that it was a carefully orchestrated ordeal in order to minimize how much thumping along i would have to do. i am down to one crutch (yay!) and am almost ready to walk without one at all, but it was still my first day out.

instead of my usual bus, train, train, train routine, i took a cab and only took one train.

i was enjoying the view of the city and the breathing of fresh air (i hadn't been out of the apartment since early afternoon on sunday) when the driver said to me: "you must be very happy."

a little flustered, i said: "i'm sorry?"

"you're humming," he said. "you must be happy."

the song that i was apparently not so quietly humming to myself? "there is life outside your apartment..."
