on sunday, mike went to jersey for a few days for a conference and since it's not all that far away, i went out to meet him last night.
first of all, the train to jersey did not take longer than the trains to our apartment. i find this ridiculous. clearly they need to get better trains to run on the east side of manhattan.
point of interest number two: the train that i was on actually goes through the foundations of the twin towers. for years now, all there is to see in that space are a few construction people milling around and what seems to be a storage place for cranes (although considering this city's experience with falling cranes, maybe it's best that they all stay in one place). the best glimpse you can get of the area is from a raised sidewalk - and even that's not a great view. but this morning i got to ride through it and experience the construction site firsthand.
all i can say is i doubt that anything will be ready by the 10 year anniversary of september 11th.
finally, mike is staying at the hyatt and i arrived from work at 9:30 p.m. having eaten no dinner. we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. i think this place is used to serving really high end clients because everyone who helped us was uber-courteous and gracious - to the point of making me a little uncomfortable. i'm sure other people who do this sort of thing a lot are used to it and expect it, but seriously, you don't have to call me "ma'am" or "miss" every three seconds. really.
the really nice thing (besides the food being quite good) (and we watch top chef so we know good! ha!) was the view of manhattan. as ashley jones sings: "that skyline always gets to me."
yet, despite all the loveliness that was one night on the other side of the river, i'd still rather be part of that skyline than watch it across the water.
