on thursday, on my way to work, the bus broke down and i overheard the following conversation.
woman #1: only in new york.
woman #2: but i wouldn't live anywhere else.
and i thought: how typical of new yorkers to assume that they have the monopoly on public transit problems. lord knows no buses ever break down in, say, ohio. (of course, just mentioning the midwest will bring a shudder and the look that means "your relatives must wear farm overalls shirtless and chew straw). and even more common is the idea that despite its problems, new york is the only place to be.
which is not to say that i dislike it. so far, mike and i have pretty much landed on our feet. our jobs are good, the theatre is awesome, there's always something interesting to see somewhere, and we get to be green using public transportation. it's a nice place.
BUT. but. i am certainly capable of living somewhere else. and if my bus were to break down in the midwest somewhere, that would be ok too.
