my aunt and my cousin are in town for a choir tour. although their schedule is inordinately full, we did manage to meet up for a little while tonight at the metropolitan museum of art.

someone once complained to me that you can never find what you are looking for at bed bath and beyond, but you can always find anything else. it seems that the museum is set up the same way. my aunt debbie wanted nothing more than to see "old paintings" and we spent 45 minutes wandering everywhere else trying to get there.

we did get to see lots of things on the way, though. plenty of greek and roman statues, modern art, rooms that looked like they came straight from palace at versailles, and, of course, the arms and armor room with the scary samurai helmets where one has a bunny rabbit on it. so monty python.

the good thing was that most of us were grade b museum types - we walked quickly through without reading anything and without learning squat. aunt debbie would occasionally say "i wonder where that came from" or someone would wonder what that particular instrument was called, but none of us bothered to stop and find out. this is very different from seeing museums with just mike, who likes to read things and learn things. sheesh. what a dork. :-)

we eventually stopped in the very large room with the moat and the egyptian temple. we wondered enough about this one to ask mike to read about it and tell us. then we adjourned to the front steps of the museum to eat tasti-d-lite.

all in all, a very enjoyable evening.

p.s. although my mother has informed me that she is not gauche enough to have birthdays, today was the anniversary of her first day on this earth. let's celebrate that.
