i should probably not begin with a joke about falling off the face of the earth, seeing as we live in prime flood territory.
(actually, i looked at the flood risk map that was sent to our apartment and we are riding the border between "very high risk" and "you're fine." still not sure where we fall)
i should probably not say anything about how we were almost dead or anything either, considering the city and its many dangers. and my mother doesn't appreciate that sort of humor.
instead, i will just tell the truth: i've been stage managing.
on the last day of march, we took our play from our rehearsal space into the space where we perform it. then we rehearsed for 6 nights in a row before opening on saturday. because of the craziness associated with last year's show, i took some days off during tech week (the week before we open. also known, not affectionately, as hell week). this time, however, the whole thing worked like a charm. the scenes were beautiful, the scene changes were smooth, the whole thing was just really lovely and not nearly as stressful as it could have been.
that being said, we did have one little issue on opening night. the lights are run from a computerized light board and that computer decided to freeze. so we were in the lights for the first scene - the scene was going and everything - and my lightboard operator tells me that she can't do anything with the board at all. so i dispatch a rescue mission while trying to figure out if we will have to hold the show. they decide to reboot the computer at which point the lights on stage go almost completely out. the guys on stage (it's an all-male scene) just kept chugging along (ha! that's a great pun if you realize that it's a scene on a train!) and we eventually rebooted just in time for the big scene where everyone goes onstage.
the official story is that they were going through a tunnel.
on a completely unrelated topic, when i came home last night, mike was in the living room trying to ride his new bike around. our living room is sizable for a new york apartment, but it's not big enough for that. mostly, though, i'm just glad that 1 - he finally has his bike and 2 - he's well enough to think about riding it.
