i think i should probably explain the whole tram thing for those of you who have not come to visit yet (shame on you!).
in the east river, between manhattan and queens, there sits a tiny little island called roosevelt island. it's like a small town oasis in the middle of crazy new york city. we had the opportunity to live there, but (sentimental as we are) we preferred the grit of the real city (those of you who have visited can either tell us that we hardly live in grit or make some crack about the grit in our apartment - it's up to you).
there are three ways to get off roosevelt island. in a car, by subway, or in the tram. the tram is a large box that travels above the river on cables. since we don't have a car and the subway is an everyday thing, we decided to take the tram.
as we got in, i told mike "i'm scared of heights."
"i'm sure the green goblin won't be here today," he responded.
yes, the tram is indeed the large box that the green goblin dangled before spiderman in the first spiderman movie. the girl? or the box full of people? ahhh, the ethical dilemma...
when we visited new york before moving here, the tram had also recently been in the news because a group of people had gotten stuck in it for over six hours.
while i didn't believe the green goblin was a threat, i must admit that i was nervous about getting stuck over the river for six hours. i found myself observing the other people in the tram with me. if we were to get stranded, who would we throw out first? my money was on the girl saying such things as "it's so bizarre! there's like this island in like the middle of nowhere!! and there are shops there?? like, no way!"
for her sake, i'm glad the most interesting part of the trip was the view.
