last night, mike and i once again braved the lower east side to meet some friends for a birthday. and while the mini burgers that we ordered were soooooo cute, the real news is that we then proceeded to a karaoke place where we rocked until much later than we meant to.
the cool thing about this karaoke place was that you didn't have to sing in front of everybody. the eight of us went into a small room with its own machine and the only people who could hear you were your friends. that leads to a lot more bravery on everyone's part.
ben was the hero of the night. he sounded like a complete rock star. the rest of us had a great time - even when kim put on "do lord oh do lord oh do remember me!" in retrospect, i probably should not have opened with "i cain't say no!" from oklahoma, but it was fun anyway.
one of the women with us last night asked how long we had been married and if we were past the honeymoon stage. she's been married for 16 years and is, as she put it, waaaay past the honeymoon stage. this was further illustrated when she turned to me later in the night and said "ok, the conversation on my husband's side has now turned to the merits of whole grain bread versus multigrain bread and i'm bored." but later on, when we were walking to the karaoke place, they walked next to each other holding hands and i thought that if that's where the non-honeymoon stage is, i could handle being there.
we can talk about it again in 13 years.

That's how karaoke places are in Japan.
