despite the fact that i made two new felt boards for storytime, i still somehow managed to lose my voice from one sore-throated day to the next and couldn't actually use them. there's always next week, but i'm still disappointed that i couldn't use my really awesome blind mice and the elephant story today.

also, it's totally strange to lose your voice in a public service job. not only was reference a little more complicated, but i discovered that whispering makes for a quieter library without ever saying "shhh!" (which, by the way, i am loath to do and therefore never ever do it). even people who knew that i had lost my voice spoke more quietly to me. there's some kind of fascinating sociological experiment behind all this, but for me it just meant having everyone lean in closer and having to chewing gum (i know, i know) to make sure i wasn't killing anyone with my breath.

i had a low sugar last night at 3:46 a.m. by the time i woke up, i knew i wasn't going to be able to stand. now normally, mike sleeps like the dead (overused metaphor, sorry). ask me to tell you the sheet stealing story some time. but when i have a low, i can reach over and tap him and say in a normal voice "mike, i'm having a low" and he will immediately wake up, walk over to the fridge and get some orange juice. of course, he'll probably still be asleep enough to take a sip before handing it to me, but it's nice to know i have backup in the low sugar department. clearly the main reason i got married. :-)
