scott and nan were here this weekend and they whisked us away to upstate new york (ok, so it was by west point - it's more upstate than manhattan!!) to see a really neat sculpture park. there are 60 acres of land with sculptures displayed on the hills.
some favorites:
(yeah, it's a calder!)
then we went to see russell wright's house. this guy actually designed a lot of the commercial cookware and dinnerware that was sold in macy's in the 1950s. his house, though, is all about nature. he built it into the rock and next to a quarry and brought stones into the living room, too. not exactly my idea of decor, but somehow it worked for him. here's his house from across the swimming hole (old quarry) - can you spot it in the trees?
it's a little tricky - he painted his house gray to match the cedar trees.
he had an amazing view from his windows, though (see below). we enjoyed walking down the paths, the red/orange/yellow leaves were gorgeous and the waterfall (into which wright put boulders so the water would make the most pleasing sound) was indeed pleasing.
