what do a twenty-foot python, a blue tegu, an alligator snapping turtle, a five-foot crocodile, and a tree frog all have in common?
aside from the obvious reptile/amphibian thing, they were also all at the library yesterday! we had a live reptile program where a very enthusiastic reptile owner showed off his pets. the kids were simultaneously fascinated and repulsed, but turned out to be braver than most of the adults who wouldn't even touch the animals.
i didn't get to touch the crocodile or the turtle (though he did show us how the turtle snapped its jaws shut when he thought he might be getting food), but i did touch the python (it took 9 kids standing in a row to hold him out to his full length), got a high five from the sticky tree frog and even got a kiss from the tegu (who looked a lot like a white iguana with black patches).
the pages were all jealous (again) of the fun we were having and i reiterated the same point as always: get a masters degree and you too can be kissed by an iguana.

Science Alive at the library!!! Great activity! At my school the children are always fascinated and I, most often, am repulsed!! Great job touching the python and getting a kiss from the tegu. I bet the children enjoyed seeing that!
When Bill and I went to the Chicago zoo, we got to pet an armadillo. But you're much cooler, cuz who's even heard of a tegu?!
