fuse beads are the craft nectar of the gods

the dress that i wore to work today was a bit of a mistake. it was black and velvet and completely out of season. on the other hand, it fits me nicely and was clean, which makes up for its other rather obvious flaws. still, no other new yorker was so unsuitably dressed. sigh.

and now i have to pause for a moment to sing the praises of fuse beads. these marvelous little craft items are very simple to use: you put plastic beads on a pegboard, cover the beads in wax paper, and iron them to fuse them together. slap a magnet on the back and voila! beautiful multi-colored fridge magnets.

those are not the only reasons they are a wonder, however. they are also:

- very low maintenance. you set out pegboards and you set out beads and it's pretty much self-explanatory.
- calming. despite their deceptively simple outward appearance, they do actually require some concentration. this means that no matter how loud, rowdy, or generally intolerable the children are on any particular day, they will instantly become quiet heads-bent-over-boards little angels.

all of this balances out the fact that, without fail, every time i do this craft someone cries because they haven't finished theirs and the library is closing and i can't stand there with the iron until doomsday waiting for them to finish. also, because i need an iron for this craft, it means mike's shirts mostly go unironed.

on the other hand, who says i would iron them if the iron were kept at home? perhaps these fuse beads have given me yet another gift: an excuse to not iron.
